The Origin of Man is an overtly romanticised performance that Friedrich staged in his studio. Filming and photographing himself, Friedrich is shown seducing a naked young man who plays the piano shrouded in fog. In a ballad-like rhythm, along a processional path, sculptural gestures of anal penetration are made—to persist beyond the screen.
